Hiriyur: The hunger protest launched by farmers demanding the release of water from the Vani Vilasa Sagara (V V Sagara) dam to 22 tanks in Chitradurga's Hiriyur taluk entered its third day on Friday, with two more individuals falling ill. K T Tippeswamy, the president of Raitha Sangha taluk unit and Timmanna participating in the protest, took ill on Friday and were rushed to the hospital. After receiving treatment, both returned and resumed their participation in the protest by evening.

On Thursday night, 70-year-old Iranna fell severely ill and was admitted to Hiriyur’s government hospital. According to Raitha Sangha sources, Iranna was later taken to Tumakuru hospital for further treatment.

Hosadurga ryots’ support

On Friday, farmers from Hosadurga taluk extended support to Hiriyur farmers by participating in the hunger protest.

“The farmers are demanding the release of water to all the tanks. If their demand is not met by Monday, farmers from all the taluks in the district will join the protest in greater numbers,” warned Raitha Sangha taluk unit president Boresh.

Shashidhar Harenahalli, Karisiddayya, Kumaraswamy, Murugappa, Chittappa, and other local farmer leaders were part of the protest.

‘Do not neglect’

Meanwhile, BJP taluk unit president K Abhinandan, in a press statement, said three farmers have already fallen ill during the hunger protest. The government will be held accountable if anything untoward happens to the protesters.
