Illegal sand mining: boats, trucks seized

The police and officers of Mines and Geology department have seized 42 boats, five trucks and one dodger that were involved in illegal sand mining in the basin of River Phalguni, under CRZ area, from a yard at Ulaibettu. The value of the seized property is Rs 1.20 crore.

Acting on a tip off, police raided the yard belonging to one Raviraj from Ulaibettu.

DCP Uma Prashanth said that Yusuf Ulaibettu, Isak Ulaibettu, Hassan Ulaibettu, Sharif Ulaibettu, Vinay Shetty and Yashwanth Alva were engaged in illegal sand extraction.

The sand extracted illegally was stored in the yard. The seized boats, vehicles and sand were handed over to the Mines and Geology Department for further action.

In another case, police seized 5 lorries that were illegally transporting sand to Kerala. The value of the seized lorry and sand is Rs 70 lakh.
