Renovation works of the old bus stand have been completed and the hi-tech bus stand situated in the heart of the city is finally set to get operational.
The bus stand, however, missed its inauguration date which was planned for Sunday (June 18). A formal inauguration by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be announced shortly.
The state-of-the-art bus stand has been constructed at a cost of Rs 32.98 crore on three acres of land. Around 36,000 sq ft has been identified for commercial purposes and 56,000 sq ft is being utilised for operations.
The basement at the bus stand can accommodate 1,000 two-wheelers and 100 cars. It is said that 22 rural buses can ply at a time from the bus stand. The city transport buses will ply 12 km from the city up to Alur, Hanumanthapura and Shantigrama.
Autodrivers have requested KSRTC authorities to provide a separate parking space for people wanting to pick up and drop passengers.
KSRTC Divisional Controller Yashwant Kumar told DH that District-in-charge Minister A Manju has already inspected the works at the bus stand and has invited the Chief Minister for the inauguration. The new bus services will benefit labourers coming to the city for work at industrial areas and other places. The inauguration will be held once the Chief Minister is available for the programme, he said.
Meanwhile, the locals have demanded that buses should exit and enter the bus stand in front of the Moti Hotel as Kasturba road is narrow and buses plying on this stretch will increase vehicle density.
