Following UGC recommendations, the State government on October 15, 2009 had issued an order setting the age for superannuation for university professors at 62 years.
V Muniyappa and 60 others had filed a petition saying that the same rule should apply to degree college professors as well, as their pay scale was the same and all the guidelines followed were in accordance with UGC guidelines. In 2010, the UGC raised the age limit for retirement from 62 years to 65 years.
Justice Anand Byrareddy directed the State to raise the age limit to 65 years for professors of both university and degree colleges.
