Kalaburagi: N Ravikumar, chief whip of the Opposition in the Council, said on Sunday that India would have surpassed the US by now in terms of development had Dr B R Ambedkar or Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel become the prime minister instead of Jawaharlal Nehru.

He was addressing the gathering after releasing the book ‘Samvidhana-75 badalayisiddu yaru balapadisiddu yaru’.

The aura of Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, was increasing each passing day after Independence, the MLC said.

He had hoped to be the planning minister and uplift the masses, Ravikumar said.

As many as 14 states out of 16 had favoured Patel becoming prime minister, while only two batted for Nehru, the BJP leader said.
