At a felicitation programme here, Yeddyurappa said that Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages with its Vedas, Upanishads and Shlokas and it is important to preserve the language for the future generation. He drew attention to Dr B R Ambedkar’s remark that Sanskrit should be made the official language of the country.
“While the world is looking at India, we are on the verge of losing our identity. Hence, there is a dire need to preserve our roots,” the chief minister said, adding that rampant westernisation has replaced Indian traditions and culture.
Home Minister V S Acharya said that following 12 years of efforts, the government was able to pass the Karnataka Sanskrit Bill. Acharya pointed that the country had just 12 Sanskrit universities.
Congress leader D K Shivakumar said that Sanskrit university is a step to preserve and conserve Indian culture, tradition and the language on the whole.
