The Richter Scale installed at Navodaya School in Galibeedu has recorded an earthquake which occurred in Indonesia on September 28.
Following massive landslides in Kodagu during August, a high-end Richter Scale, which works on network communication, was installed at Navodaya School premises, Galibeedu.
With the embedded technology, the machine is able to record earthquakes occurring in faraway locations. The device, imported from the US, is capable of recording the intensity of earthquakes with a magnitude of five and above, according to the scientists.
The Richter Scale was installed on the school premises following a request by the district administration.
An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude shook the Palu city of Indonesian island Sulawesi on September 28. The machine had recorded the seismic activity which took place 10-km deep below the ground. The readings were subsequently sent to the Geological Centre in Hyderabad.
Earlier, a Richter Scale was installed on the premises of Harangi reservoir. But, even after repeated instances of tremors being felt by the people of the district during July, no readings were found in the machine at Harangi.
