Davanagere: Police arrested four inter-state bank robbers from Uttar Pradesh, who were planning a burglary in Karnataka, near Arabagatte in Honnali taluk on Sunday.

Police also opened fire and shot one of the accused at his leg as he tried to escape after attacking them. The accused had used deadly weapons, injuring a police constable.

Police have seized two cars, iron rod, regulator, chilli powder and hand gloves from the accused.

The accused have been identified as Guddu, Hazrath Ali, Aslam and Kamruddin, aged between 40 and 50. They were involved in several bank robbery cases reported in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and other states. They came to Karnataka a few weeks ago and were planning to rob an SBI Bank at Savalanga in Honnali taluk.

After getting specific information about the robbers, the police had set up a blockade near Arabagatte on Saturday midnight. On Sunday morning, they stopped three cars that were moving suspiciously and started checking them. The accused tried to escape on seeing the police after which they were chased down.

The injured suspect and the police constable were sent to Nyamathi Community Health Centre for treatment. Later, they were admitted to the Chigateri District General Hospital in Davangere.
