Bengaluru: The Justice Nagamohan Das Commission has recommended a separate category with 1% reservation for the Adi Karnataka, Adi Dravida and Adi Andhra communities (AK, AD and AA) to accommodate those not included in any of the other four categories.

The SC list includes 101 castes, including AK, AD and AA and 98 other moola jatis (original caste). Since both SC (Right) and SC (Left) come under AK, AD and AA in different parts of the state, the current survey had urged participants to mention the original caste alongside AK, AD or AA.

However, many people have still got themselves enumerated as AK, AD or AA, without mentioning the primary castes. A few months ago, Justice Das had told a press conference that this was because of three reasons. Firstly, some people, having used the AK, AD and AA nomenclature for years, are unaware of their original castes.

Secondly, some are aware of their original castes but do not prefer to disclose. Finally, there are some castes, like Mansa, Madiga Dasari and Kembatti, which haven’t been mentioned in the list of 101 castes.

These reasons may have necessitated a separate category for AK, AD and AA. This basket is said to be the smallest of the five categories, with nearly 5 lakh population.
