They alleged that the postal department and the UTI have deceived them of lakhs of rupees.

They said: “We have been conned into depositing the amount by telling us that our money will be doubled in short time.”

“The officials told us that the Postal department has signed a memorandum with the UTI in 2007 and persuaded us to deposit the amount. However, when asked after a few months, we were not only denied the assured sum but also refused refund of our deposit,” the protesters said.

Each of them had deposited from Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh and they were told that they would get the returns within three years.

One of them, who deposited Rs three lakh in 2007, and he got a cheque for Rs 2.50 lakh, deducting Rs 50,000, the residents said.

When contacted, S Netravati, post master of the Tippenahalli branch, said that the officials of the department had told in 2007 that an agreement has been signed with the UTI and explained the details of the agreement.

“I had passed on this information to the residents of Tippenahalli and transferred all the deposits to the department. I don’t anything more about the scheme,” she said.

She said her efforts to contact the seniors were futile. “Even the inspector and senior officials are also not responding to our complaints,” she said, expressing her helplessness.
