The State government will consider shifting former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha, who has been lodged in Parappana Agrahara prisons, to Tamil Nadu, if the government of that state requests for the same, said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra.
The AIADMK supremo has been convicted in the disproportionate assets case and lodged at the Central prisons in Parappana Agrahara, Bangalore.
Addressing reporters here on Wednesday, the minister said, “So far, there was no provision in law to shift Jayalalitha. Now that it is possible, we will consider if we get a request from chief secretary of Tamil Nadu government.”
The chief secretary of Tamil Nadu and DGP (prisons) should write to the Karnataka government, with a request to shift Jayalalitha to a jail in Tamil Nadu. After taking the consent of the DGP (prisons) in the State and opinion of the High Court of Karnataka, a decision will be taken, the minister said.
The Jayalalitha case is in no way connected to the State. The proceedings were held in the State, following an order to this effect from the Supreme Court.
It is the duty of the Tamil Nadu government to ensure safety of Kannadigas living in that State.
