New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti V Somanna on Thursday said that Rs 28,623 crore had been allocated to Karnataka under the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ (JJM) and only Rs 11,760 crore had been utilized so far.
He was responding to a question in the Lok Sabha by Congress member from Raichur G Kumar Naik.
“In 2019, only 24.51 lakh rural households in the state had piped water connection. In the last six years, 58.9 lakh households have been provided tap water, a 83.26 per cent project progress,” he said.
The states are responsible for the implementation, operation and maintenance of the scheme, Somanna said. The JJM is a centrally sponsored scheme to provide piped potable water to every rural household.
Kaiga power plant
Construction of the fifth and sixth units of the Kaiga nuclear power plant in Uttara Kannada district has been awarded to Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited, the Rajya Sabha was told.
Responding to a question by Congress’ G C Chandrashekhar, Union Minister for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh said, “The construction of the fifth and sixth units will cost Rs 21,000 crore and is expected to be completed by 2030-31.”
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has given permission for the establishment of two units of 700 MW each there, he said.
