‘Karanth Puraskara’ was conferred on environmentalist Dr N A Madhyastha, at a programme organised to commemorate 111th birth anniversary of late Dr Kota Shivaram Karanth, here on Wednesday.

The programme was organised jointly by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Sahitya Parishat and Kalkura Pratistana.

Speaking on the occasion, Hampi Kannada University retired lecturer Prof A V Navada said that Karanth was a multi-faceted personlity. He was a writer, critic, scientist, photographer and so on.

“Karanth had not restricted himself to one section.  His work should be read by  sociologists, anthropologists as well.

He had made an indepth study on folklore. We can find very rare Kundapura Kannada words in his ‘Sirgannada Kosha,” he said.

Scholar Dr William Da’Silva said that one can observe a kind of duality between tradition and modernsim in the work of Karanth.

Speaking after accepting the award, Dr N A Madhyastha said that Karanth is one of the greatest scholar the State ever produced.

‘Modala Kallu’, a book by retired lecturer Uday Kumar Malla was released on the occasion.
Deputy Mayor Amitakala inaugurated the programme by paying floral tribute to Shivarama Karanth’s portrait. MLC Monappa Bhandary presided.
