Bengaluru: ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activists) working in urban areas and in sub-centres that have not been upgraded to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will be paid a monthly team-based incentive of Rs 1,000.

The state government issued an order on Thursday, bringing this into effect, and noting that this would come to an estimated cost of Rs 1,800.48 lakh. This comes after the budget announcement in March included a point about their honorariums being hiked by Rs 1,000.

There are presently 41,000 ASHAs in Karnataka, out of total sanctioned number of 42,524 posts. In Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, they work with health inspectors and other primary and community healthcare officials in teams, and are offered team-based incentives accordingly. However, ASHAs working in healthcare facilities that haven't been upgraded to Mandirs and those that are in urban areas do not avail these incentives.

To bridge this gap in payments among ASHAs in the state, the government has agreed to pay them out of the Rs 2,500 lakh grant available to them.
