Bengaluru: The National Highway 4A was closed for traffic following a landslide at Anmod Ghat on Karnataka-Goa border on Saturday.
A portion of the highway was washed away in the torrential rain that has lashed the region. Superintendent of Police A Narayan has stopped vehicular movement as a precautionary measure.
The highway is a major road link between the cities and towns in north Karnataka and Goa. The RTC buses to Goa from Hubballi and Belagavi take this route. With the closure of the highway, the vehicles are forced to take over 100 km of detours.
Many parts of Uttara Kannada district, areas in ghats in particular, continued to receive intermittent rains coupled with gusty winds.
Kodagu continued to face rain fury on Saturday with the Bhagamandala region experiencing unyielding showers. Madikeri taluk has witnessed an average rainfall of 70 mm in the last 24 hours. The rivers - Cauvery and Lakshmanathirtha - are flowing above the danger mark in several places.
Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja on Saturday issued an order to ban movement of heavy goods vehicles in the district from July 6 to August 5.
Parts of Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts also experienced heavy showers intermittently.
Udupi district continued to receive heavy rains on Saturday. Udupi saw 70 mm of rain while Kundapur and Karkala town experienced 90 mm and 60 mm respectively.
As many as seven houses were completely damaged in the rain in Belagavi city in the last two days. Parashuram Kambale’s house at Kakativase collapsed on Friday.
The family of five was in Gokak to attend Laxmi Jatre (fair) when the incident occurred.
Meanwhile, several monuments in Hampi and Anegundi continued to remain under floodwaters following heavy discharge from Tungabhadra reservoir.
More than 60,000 cusec of water was released
from TB dam on Saturday. Coracle service in Tungabhadra river in Hampi has been banned.
