Every year, on the eve of Republic Day, the Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours of India, are announced.

This year, sources claim, Anke Gowda will be awarded in the unsung heroes category.

JJM Medical College Pathology professor and Karnataka Hemophilia Society founder Suresh Hanagavadi was recognised by DH in its Changemakers 2021.

Suresh, being a severe hemophilic, has extensively travelled across the country to improve the quality of hemophilia care services. He has also played a crucial role in making expensive medicines for hemophilia patients available free of cost at all government district hospitals in Karnataka.

Besides, he has established an exclusive state-of-the-art Hemophilia Treatment Centre in Davangere for all inherited blood disorders under one roof by mobilising resources from public, philanthropists and government.

Speaking to DH, Hanagavadi said it was unexpected.

"This is the result of our nearly four decades of efforts to get recognition for hemophilia at the national-level. Silent pain of hemophilia patients has been rewarded. I am hopeful that this award would help hemophilics get quality healthcare across the country. Besides, the newly discovered medical system must be available for patients of rare blood disorders including hemophilia. Indian playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, who was associated with Karnataka Hemophilia Society, used to tell me that I should get recognition at the national-level. At last, it has happened."

This year’s Padma Awards recognise a wide spectrum of unsung heroes from across the length and breadth of India.
