Karnataka's literacy rate increases by nine per cent

But the female literacy is yet to catch up with male literacy which is on the higher side. Dakshina Kannada, Bangalore and Udupi districts are on the top with 88.62 per cent, 88.48 per cent and 86.29 per cent literacy rates, respectively.

As many as 12 districts have literacy rates more than the State average of 75.60 per cent. Yadgir, Raichur and Chamarajanagar are at the bottom with 52.36 per cent, 60.46 per cent and 61.12 per cent literacy rate, respectively.

Provisional figures

As per the provisional figures of Census 2011 released on Wednesday, male literacy has increased from 76.10 per cent in 2001 to 82.85 per cent in 2011, while female literacy has increased from 56.87 per cent to 68.13 per cent in 10 years.

In Raichur and Yadgir districts the number of female illiterates exceeds the number of female literates. Only in three districts -- Bangalore, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi -- female literacy rate is above 80 per cent. The State now has 4.10 crore literates against 3.04 crore in 2001 – an increase of 1.06 crore.
