Mango is grown in 42,000 hectares in Kolar district of which 24,000 hectares is under mango cultivation in Srinivaspur taluk and another 10,500 hectares in Mulbagal taluk.
Of the mango varieties cultivated in the district Totapuri accounts from 50 percent. Other varieties include Baiganapalli (20 per cent), Rajgiri (12 per cent), Neelam (15 per cent) and Benish (20 per cent).
In June 417 loads of mangoes weighing 49,600 quintals were sold to other states through the APMC in Mulbagal Town. Current market prices per tonne of different varieties of mangoes are: Totapuri (Rs 3,500), Neelam (Rs 4,500), Naati (Rs 1,500), Benish (Rs 9,000) and Kalapad (Rs 14,000). These mangoes have been purchased by some agencies in the states of Orissa, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Besides fall in prices, mangoes have also been destroyed by heavy winds. The farmers who had hopes of repaying their loans have been disappointed once again.
