Mundappa (38), a resident of Kalmanje of Madmalkatte in Belthangady taluk, is in the fray as a Congress candidate from Ujire zilla panchayat constituency.
A coordinator with Jana Shikshana Trust, an NGO, Mundappa got the ticket on the strength of his service for the welfare of the poor in villages.
He has been identified as a social worker and a political leader in the taluk for the last 15 years. A college dropout, Mundappa has an in-depth knowledge of politics and has organised several programmes for the uplift of rural poor, particularly, dalits.
“I have been serving people for the past 15 years and now I am getting an opportunity to render service through politics. I will work honestly and without any discrimination,” Mundappa told Deccan Herald.
District Congress Committee president B Ramanatha Rai said the Congress is the only party in the district to offer seat to a Koraga community member. He said that of the 18 unreserved seats for the ZP, the party has fielded six candidates of minority and backward classes.
