The two most backward communities of Karnataka, the Koramas and the Korachas, have been living in deplorable conditions for ages. Despite constitutional provisions to elevate them, their status has undergone little change.
Keeping the poor condition of the two communities in mind, which were scattered in the name of different associations, the leaders of the two communities have come together to form the ‘Akhila Karnataka Korama and Korachara Mahasangha’ (All Karnataka Korama-Koracha Association). The association has appointed P Ramesh as its State convener.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Ramesh said that the first meeting of the Mahasangha will take place at Town Hall at 11.30 am on Sunday. A large number of people from the two communities are expected to participate. After the cultural event, a resolution will be passed to press the government to make special provisions in the forthcoming budget for the two communities.
According to Ramesh, a demand will also be made to protect their dialect, Kuluva. “Our dialect is basically Dravidian and is as old as Tamil. We need to revive it,” he said.
