Mangaluru: The Lokayukta police arrested Mangaluru North Traffic Police Inspector Mohammed Sharief and police constable Praveen Naika for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 for releasing the vehicle of a person as per the order of a court.
The court had ordered the release of the scooter which was in police custody. The complainant had approached Inspector Muhammad Sharief to get it released. Sharif demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 to release the scooter.
When asked to reduce the amount, he directed the complainant to meet head constable Nagarathna at the station. When he met her, she verbally abused the complainant and demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000. Unwilling to pay the bribe, he filed a complaint to the Lokayukta police.
The Lokayukta police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Gana Kumar caught Praveen Naika while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 on the directions of Mohammed Sharief. Naika and Mohammed Sharief were arrested under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The operation was conducted by District Lokayukta Superintendent of Police (in-charge) Nandini BN, DySP Gana P Kumar, Inspector Amanulla A, Chandrashekhar KN, and Udupi Station Inspector Manjunath and others.
