Acting on a complaint, Lokayukta engineering division officer Devi Prasad inspected the under-construction Ambedkar Bhavan, in Mandya, on Monday.

Advocate J Ramaiah had lodged a complaint, alleging poor quality works and delay in completing the project.

Devi Prasad, accompanied by a team of experts, arrived at the construction site. He directed the team to take up necessary quality test using ‘rebound hammer’, which was also video recorded.

The petitioner, Ramaiah, complained that the works were substandard and poor quality cement and sand were used.

The officer assured to take a second opinion from a private engineer on the works and submit a report within 25 days. Reasons for the delay in completing the works will be sought from the authorities concerned, he added.

Nirmithi Kendra Engineer Jagadish was absent during the Lokayukta official’s visit, citing health complications.

Site engineers Sridhar and Harish provided necessary information.

Background
The Social Welfare department had released Rs 3 crore in 1995 for the construction of Ambedkar Bhavan. The site was identified in 2000 and the works began in 2010. The bhavan, which was started with an estimation for Rs 4.95 crore, has exceeded Rs 10 crore as of now, it is said.
