A huge crowd, including students of the various Nitte institutions, faculty, students of the neighbouring schools and Scouts and Guides, had assembled to witness the adventurous feats performed by the fire service personnel with an aim to create awareness among the public regarding reduction of disaster during the time of natural and manmade calamities.

The personnel displayed various methods of extinguishing fire, which were received by the crowd with thundering applause.  They also demonstrated rescue operations from high rise buildings. The multi-purpose fire service vehicle with a high mast light was a crowd puller.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj inaugurated the celebrations and said that doctors are the primary requirement during the time of disaster and urged the medical students to respond positively to the call whenever required.

“Man can never develop technology to prevent natural disasters, but can reduce their impact by careful planning,” the DC said and added that saving human lives during such situations is more important than saving properties.

‘Lack of precautions’

Lack of enough precautions and safety requirements are the reason for man made disasters like fire.  They can be prevented, he said while adding that the district administration is looking into the problem of high rise buildings lacking the prescribed security norms.

Vice Chancellor of Nitte University Dr Shantharam Shetty pointed out that unless there is people to people communication and a leader, disaster management teams will lead only to further disaster.  Principal and Dean of ABSMIDS Prof Dr B Rajendra Prasad, Home Guards Commandant Dr Nidarsh D Hegde, Fire Officer Basavannappa and others were present on the occasion.
