Madikeri: An elephant attack in Emmegundi estate near Palibetta in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district led to the death of a man on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as R Selvam alias Chella Mestri (65). A native of Madhurai, Tamil Nadu, he had retired after working as a righter in a local coffee estate.

When he was on his morning walk at 6:30 am, a wild elephant attacked him. Incurring serious injuries, Selvam died on the spot.

A warning was issued by the forest department to the local residents through SMS on the movement of a herd comprising six elephants.

The female elephant, which was part of the herd, had attacked Selvam as it was protective of its calf. Measures are being taken to chase away the elephants to the forest, DCF Jagannath said.
