Man fires to save sandalwood tree

Dr Rajendra, chairman of Gnanodaya Vidyalaya, a resident of Bannimantap ‘A’ Layout is the daring denizen, who has set an example to others. He woke up to some sounds around 2.30 am, and peeped out of the window  -- from his first floor room --  to see four persons near the sandalwood trees in the compound. Of the two trees, one had been already felled.

Without wasting any time -- with his wife and mother in deep slumber, Rajendra stealthily pulled out the licenced .32 revolver and came near the window only to see a smuggler, the police said.

He opened fire emptying four rounds of bullets, scaring away the intruders who took to heels. He subsequently informed N R Police, who rushed to the spot. According to Rajendra, it’s for the first time such an incident has occurred.

Scientist’s kin dies

A woman has died owing to accidental injuries in the city on Thursday. Bina Devi (45) wife of Dr Niboyaima Singh, a research scientist at CFTRI here is the victim.

A KSRTC bus had run over the lady, after she fell off the two-wheeler on July 2. She was riding pillion with her husband in rider’s seat, when their vehicle was allegedly brushed off by the bus, causing the fall near Aishwarya petrol bunk junction on Hunsur road. She was rushed to B M Hospital, where she was administered treatment but to no avail. V V Puram traffic police who had registered a case then, and had also arrested the erring bus driver, who was released later on bail.

However, the victim’s friends alleged that the KSRTC authorities least bothered to do their bit in terms of meeting medical expenses or even offering help, as the victim was not a localite, and was from North India.
