Belagavi: A person from Gujarat who had made away with Rs 6.10 lakh in cash from the bank accounts of a Christian couple residing at Beedi village in Khanapur taluk has been arrested by the police.
The two cell phones used for initiating the transactions have been confiscated by Nandgad police in Khanapur taluk on Monday.
Dorgjeron alias Diago Santan Nazareth (82) and his wife Flaviana Diago Nazareth (79) , residents of Christian Galli, Bidi were found dead by their neighbours on March 28, at around 8 pm.
A suicide note written in English was recovered from the spot in which Diego Nazareth stated that he had been threatened by an individual claiming to be a high-ranking telecom official from Delhi.
Fraudster had threatened Diego that he was being "digitally arrested" for the misuse of his SIM card. Diego and his wife ended there lives as they were unable to meet the monetary demands.
Superintendent of Police Dr Bheemshankar Guled informed that accused Chirag Jeevrajbhai Lakkad resident of Surat has been arrested.
The accused was able to get Rs 6.10 lakh from the SBI bank account of Diago to his IDFC bank account in the name of Balaji Industries.
Later the accused transferred the money to other bank accounts.
Lakkad was arrested on Monday and two cell phones used for cash transfer have been recovered. He was produced in the court and has been sent into judicial custody, he said.
