Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa has said fees for PG courses have been increased by 10 to 12 per cent from the previous year fee, as per the university statute. The syndicate approved the hike by 10 to 12 per cent.

Chairing the academic council meeting here on Saturday, he said representatives from various students organisations had appealed to revoke the increase in fee by 18 to 30 per cent. The total fees had not been revised for the past four years. The university has plans to improve the facilities in the university.

For the development and mobilising the internal resources, the fee was hiked. It may be recalled that ABVP members had recently alleged that the total fees of PG courses have been increased unscientifically. The total admission fees alone has been increased by Rs 3,920 from Rs 12,280 in 2014-15 to Rs 16,200 in 2015-16. The annual tuition fee has been increased from Rs 3,800 to Rs 5,000. The members had said the hike was unscientific and will affect meritorious students especially from poor background.  The VC said fee structure has already been uploaded in the university web portal.

The Council also gave its nod to conduct make up examination for students who have failed in the fifth semester, within three months of the announcement of results.

Academic Council in its meeting in June had agreed to amend the regulations to enable students who have failed in the fifth semester examination to appear for the make-up examination within three months. With this, students who have failed in fifth semester examination need not wait for a year to re-appear for examination. This will be implemented from this academic year itself. In case if a student had passed in the sixth semester and had not cleared the fifth semester, he would be wasting a year as he can not join any PG courses in the middle of an academic year. Registrar Evaluation Prof B Narayana said revaluation result of the sixth semseter courses will be completed and published either on August 1 or 2.

Directorate of Correspondence Courses of Mangalore University Prof P A Rego said though the syllabus for correspondence courses have been revised, study materials for few courses are not ready. Hence, the council decided to continue the correspondence courses with old syllabus during the academic year.

The Council gave its nod to regulations for two-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Master of Education (MEd) programme as per the NCTE Regulations 2014 framed under Section 44 (1) (c) of the KSU Act 2000. Till now, the duration of the BEd and MEd programmes were one-year. With the direction of the NCTE, the duration of the courses have been made two-year.

Entrance exam
If PG courses receive less number of applications than actual number of seats, seeking admission to the courses , then it has been decided not to conduct the entrance examinations. The Council also okayed the proposal to start Evening College at University College in Mangaluru and Vishwamangala First Grade College at the university campus in Konaje.

Registrar Evaluation said errors in 325 degree certificates issued by Mangalore University during its 33rd convocation has been rectified. Letters have been dispatched to the students to submit their certificates to issue the fresh degree certificates. The VC said revised examination manual by incorporating some changes have been approved in the Syndicate. It will be uploaded to the university website soon.
