Mangaluru: A total of 335 kg ganja seized by the police in police commissionerate limits in Mangaluru were destroyed at Re Sustainability Healthcare Solution Ltd in Kolnad Industrial Area in Mulki on Wednesday.
Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal said that after availing permission from court, drugs seized in 37 cases during 2023-24 were destroyed. The destroyed drugs also comprised 6.5 kg of MDMA, 16 gram of cocaine as well. The value of the destroyed drugs is Rs 6.80 crore.
The commissioner said that more than 1000 drug cases were booked in commissionerate limits in 2024. Of which, 88 were peddling cases.
Responding to queries, Commissioner Agrawal emphasized the strict enforcement measures taken by the police. Anti-drug teams have been established in all subdivisions of the Mangaluru Commissionerate. These teams actively monitor drug peddlers and users, ensuring cases are booked against offenders. As a result, the commissionerate has seen a rise in cases compared to previous years. He noted that, based on information gathered from arrested drug users, the police have successfully tracked second- and third-level peddlers within the network.
Highlighting a larger narcotics network, the Commissioner mentioned that Nigerian nationals operating in Bengaluru are key suppliers of drugs, sourcing narcotics from Delhi. This network spans across the country, with individuals arriving on tourist visas often overstaying and engaging in drug peddling.
