From tiny tots to elderly, a large number of people became a part of fun and frolic at a marshy field sports meet held at Kaggodlu in the taluk on Saturday.

It was a visual treat to see the contestants trying their best to reach the victory point in a running race competition. Some contestants fell on the marshy field while a few reached their target and were seen enjoying every bit of it.

The sports event was organised by the Zilla Panchayat, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Zilla Yuva Okkoota in the field of C D Bopaiah at Kaggodlu.

Volleyball, throwball, tug-of-war, race and other competitions were held separately for men, women and children.

Speaking after inaugurating the sports meet, MLA K G Bopaiah said that Kodagu district is the land of sports. There is a historical reference to marshy field sports in the district. In the past, the winners were honoured with a full bunch of banana, coconut, betel leaves and areca nut, he said.

Sports help to keep the body sound, he said.

Zilla Panchayat President B A Harish said, “Paddy fields help in improving the groundwater table. The paddy fields should not be left fallow."

Taluk Panchayat Member Kumuda Rashmi also spoke on the occasion.
