Mangaluru: A powerful explosion at a stone quarry in Madattadka, Vittalmudnur village in Vittal police station limits, triggered shockwaves up to a radius of 5 km on Tuesday.
As a result of the explosion at NS crusher quarry, which took place around 1.30 pm, roofs, windows, and household items in more than 15 houses were shattered.
Following the explosion, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Yathish N, Bantwal tahsildar Archana Bhat, revenue inspector Ravi M N, panchayat development officer Sujay, and officials from the mining department visited the site.
Residents alleged that quarry operations were being conducted within 20 meters of residential areas, violating safety regulations. Despite repeated complaints, officials had failed to take action, residents alleged.
SP Yathish also directed Vittal police inspector to submit a report on the quarry. "The report will be forwarded to deputy commissioner for necessary action," he promised.
SP Yathish confirmed that the explosion occurred when workers had left the explosives unattended during lunch break. He said a case will be registered against those responsible for improper handling of explosives.
