Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has sent the ordinance to protect borrowers from harassment by microfinance institutions (MFIs) to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot for his assent. The Karnataka Micro Finance (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Ordinance 2025 has reached Raj Bhavan. The Governor was out of town and was scheduled to reach the city late on Monday.

Speaking to reporters here, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar said that the government would not allow MFIs to take law into their hands and torture the poor using hooligans. “We will give more power to the police to handle this,” he declared. Shivakumar said several FIRs had been lodged against MFIs in Belagavi, Bidar, Mysuru and Ramanagar districts. 

“The CM and Cooperation Minister (K N Rajanna) have issued stern warnings in this regard. We have also started helplines in all district headquarters,” he said.
