Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Dr Thirumalachari Ramasami, stressed on the need for milestone innovations in the modern days for India.

He was speaking at the fourth convocation of JSS University, here on Saturday. Different innovations were required in the field of discovering drugs.

He said that new perceptions into disease biology were the need of the hour, with alternative models for cost optimisation in the field of drug innovations, as the existing models were not sustainable. “The entire drug discovery system should be re-addressed and analysed,” he added.  He said, medical care costs for most diseases have sky-rocketed, which adversely affects the decision making process in healthcare, which should not be viewed as a business model. He added that the difference between viewing health as business and as service should be addressed. “Health issues should not be managed by the market,” he added.

Expressing his dilemna over the present educational system in India, he said that it contributed least to the happiness of the society. “Modern India is in need of new system of education as well as research in healthcare,” he added.

As many as 490 students received their graduation and post graduation, while, 26 secured gold medals.
