Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda announced on Saturday that the government would implement satellite-based crop insurance in future.

Speaking to farmers’ leaders in the city, the minister said that the Centre was contemplating on bringing about changes in the present crop insurance system. Byregowda said that they would give suggestions to the Centre in this regard after consulting farmers, if the latter provided them the draft of the changes to be made in the crop insurance system.

The minister said that it was difficult to determine compensation at the individual and village level under the crop insurance system. Thus, the satellite-based option was the best one, he said.

The satellite-based system was likely to be implemented in the next two to three years, Byregowda said.
