Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D’Souza stressed the need for a debate on invoking selective probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the murders in the state.

“I will raise the issue in the Legislative Council and debate over the Centre invoking the NIA probe on murders as per their wish,” he told mediapersons in Mangaluru.

Referring to the Union Home Ministry handing over the probe into the murder of Hindu activist and rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty to NIA, MLC Ivan D’Souza asked why only one case was referred to NIA. Let the NIA probe into all the murders that took place in Dakshina Kannada district after the murder of Praveen Nettaru in 2022, he added.

“If DK MP had concern for the district, then he should have asked for a NIA probe into all the murders in the district rather than one murder. The demand for NIA probe into murder of Suhas Shetty had a political motive behind it,” he said.

"The BJP as an opposition has failed to discharge its duties effectively. The BJP’s intention is not good for the society and they do not want peace and harmony in the society,” he alleged.

“If they want to restore peace and harmony, then BJP leaders including B Y Vijayendra would not have demoralised the police personnel during their visit to Dakshina Kannada on Monday. The BJP has a problem when the police personnel act as per the law as well. The Congress led government has asked the police to act as per the law while maintaining law and order. To protect themselves, they are speaking ill of the police,” the MLC said.

The MLC also criticised BJP leaders for using the words ‘goonda’ and ‘puppets of the government’ against the police in Dakshina Kannada.
