The project has been implemented in National Institute of Technology, Surathkal. Mangalore University is the second institution in the country where the project is being implemented.
Addressing the academic council meet on Wednesday, Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy said the programme National Knowledge Network (NKN) aims to provide intranet connectivity across all universities through high speed network enabling the concept, “University without walls.” Any learning resource available in the network is visible to and accessible from any other user connected to the network thus realising the vision of countrywide classroom. The University at present has bandwidth of 20 Mbps.
“The project cost is Rs two crore and Ministry for Human Resource Development will provide subsidy of Rs 1.30 crore and the BSNL will provide a subsidy of Rs 25 lakh. The University will have to pay a sum of Rs 45 lakh (Rs 5 lakh per annum) to the Centre for the facility.
