Shivamogga: A mobile phone was found in the stomach of a prisoner lodged at the Central Jail at Sogane here. Subsequently, doctors at McGann Hospital performed surgery on Friday and removed the mobile phone.

A mobile phone one inch wide and three inches long was found in the stomach of prisoner Daulat Khan alias Gunda (30).

The prisoner, however, claimed that he had swallowed a stone.

A court in Shivamogga had sentenced Daulat Khan to 10 years in prison in a case. He had come to the prison hospital on June 24 and told the doctors that he had swallowed a stone. They had given him medicine. When the stomach pain worsened, the doctors examined him and sent him to district general hospital for further treatment.

An X-ray revealed that Daulat had an object in his stomach and the mobile phone was found during the surgery.

Central Jail Superintendent P Ranganath has filed a complaint with the Tunga Nagar police station here, seeking an investigation the incident.

Two years ago, a mobile phone was found in the stomach of a Central Jail inmate who was brought to the same hospital with stomach pain.
