Kodagu district received heavy rain on Wednesday, indicating the arrival of Monsoon. The rain has brought smile on the face of the farmers.

Madikeri, Ponnampet, Suntikoppa, Bhagamandala, Virajpet, Ammathi, Somwarpet, Srimangala, Balele, Napoklu, Shanthalli, Shanivarasanthe, Kushalnagar, Sampaje has been receiving rain since Wednesday morning. On an average, the district received 13.61 mm rainfall.

People, particularly motorcyclists, scampered for cover as it started raining  in the morning. Many roads were waterlogged and some manholes were overflowing in Madikeri. With catchment area receiving rainfall, 15 cusecs water had flowed into Harangi reservoir. The water-level in the reservoir has reached 2805.81 feet.

The rain has brought smile on the face of those villagers who were facing acute shortage of water. The district had not received required pre-monsoon showers. As a result, the people of Kodagu had faced shortage of water. The borwells and open wells had gone dry at several places.

The umbrellas, sweaters and rain shoes which were inside the cupboard had come out. The farmers have started making arrangement for starting the agriculture activities and have started purchasing seeds.

Last year, the district had received 26.92 mm rainfall on the same day. From January till date, the district has received 207.70 mm rainfall. Last year, it was 403.57 mm.

The details of rainfall received are as follows: Madikeri Kasaba (10.60 mm), Napoklu (18.60 mm), Sampaje (7.40 mm), Bhagamandala (31.20 mm), Virajpet Kasaba (37 mm), Hudikeri (11.40 mm), Srimangala (21 mm), Ponnampet (27 mm), Ammathi (20.30 mm), Balale (5 mm), Somwarpet (4.20 mm), Shanivarasanthe (6.40 mm), Shanthalli (10.20 mm), Kushalnagar (1.80 mm), Suntikoppa (4 mm).

Applications invited

Virajpet taluk Social Welfare Department has invited applications for admission to pre-metric hostels and Girijana Ashrama shaale.

According to a press release, the students should belong to SC/ST and must be studying in sixth to tenth standard. The students studying in first to seven standard can apply for Ashrama school.

Hostel will provide free stay, food, uniform and other basic necessities. Interested eligible students may contact Officer, Social Welfare Department, Ponnampet or Hostel in-charge. The last date to send duly filled application is June 15.
