He was speaking at the valedictory of the ‘Fifth national conference on plastic and rubber technology - Polycon 2011’ organised by the Department of Polymer Science and Technology, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) here on Tuesday.
Prof Rangappa said that non-recyclable plastic has to used more widely in asphalting of roads.
Prof Rangappa mentioned that research being carried has brought forth a stronger type of plastic that is strong, flexible and lightweight, which can used in construction of buildings.
Mentioning that banning plastic shouldn’t be the main motto, Prof Rangappa pointed out that emphasis should be given to using low density products such as polyethylene.
Explaining the advantages of using paper bags over plastic, Prof Rangappa said that apart from pollution caused by the latter, it leaves a lasting imprint on the environment.
Defence Food Research Laboratory Director Dr A S Bawa said that society was initially very happy about the use of plastic because of its strength, elasticity and applicability.
Despite its drawbacks, it’s not possible to do away with the material, he added. Observing that it become a part and parcel of life, Dr Bawa said that proper disposal, reusability and recylability should also be considered.
SJCE Principal Dr B G Sangameshwara, Deputy General Manager - Technical, J K Tyre and Industries Limited, S Vasudeva Rao were present.
