Mangaluru: Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader visited the residence of Abdul Rahiman, who was murdered on May 27 in Kolathamajalu, Bantwal taluk, on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, “When the unfortunate incident occurred, I was on a Hajj pilgrimage. This is not merely a murder, but a blow to the harmonious fabric of Dakshina Kannada. Civilised society has condemned this act. No religion or community will ever support such killing.”
“I have spoken with the Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police, and Superintendent of Police, as well as with the Chief Minister and Home Minister. The government will ensure that justice is delivered to Rahiman’s family. The villagers and the family have demanded that all those involved in the crime be brought to justice, and that strict action be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. I am confident the government will take appropriate action,” he added.
When asked about compensation for the victim's kin, the Speaker said, “Such matters cannot be discussed in public. I will consult with the District In-charge Minister, and I am confident the government will act in accordance with the law.”
Referring to the transfer of senior police officials, he said, “Discussions about transferring the Commissioner of Police and Superintendent of Police were already underway before I left for the Hajj pilgrimage. The government had decided to replace them. However, the unfortunate incident occurred before the transfers could be executed," Khader said.
"When miscreants issued threats on social media and indulged in provocative speeches and posts, I had directed both the Commissioner and SP to take strict action. As provocations continued, I held further discussions with the DGP and Home Minister about appointing proactive senior police officers to Dakshina Kannada, rather than merely active ones,” he added.
