Residents in the city enthusiastically shopped on Sunday to gear up to celebrate the first festival of the year, Makara Sankranti, on Monday. Roadside vendors were seen selling sugarcane, jaggery, plantain and mango leaves, ellu-bella (sesame seeds and jaggery). Flowers and fruits were doing roaring business near Devaraja Market and at vantage points of the city.

While sugarcane was sold at Rs 20 to Rs 40 per pair, ellu-bella was sold at around Rs 150 per kg. Chrysanthemum, kakada and jasmine were sold at Rs 40 per metre.

It is believed that the Sun changes its path from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana and this change marks the celebration of Sankranti. All temples in the city have organised special pujas on account of Sankranti festival today.
