The stage is all set for the 11-day Dasara festivities in heritage city. The festivities will be formally inaugurated at a function atop the Chamundi Hill on Saturday. But, the tourists inflow to the city, a day before the beginning of Dasara, on Friday, was yet to pick up. With the ongoing Cauvery River water sharing row, businessmen, who usually await Dasara season to see some profit are keeping their fingers crossed.

A programme scheduled to accord traditional welcome to foreign tourists, organised by Janani Trust, at Mysuru Palace, on Friday, was proof to this. The members of the trust, who had made all arrangements for the event, could identify the first foreign guest only around 11.30 am. Anabela, from South America was accorded a Mysuru-style reception.

The Mysuru Palace is a must on the itinerary of tourists across the country and the globe. On an average, around 10,000 tourists visit the Palace everyday. On September 27, the number of tourists visited the Palace was 3,036. The total number of visitors in September, 2016, is around 1,30,000 while as many as 2,25,725 tourists, including 3,527 foreigners, visited the Palace in the month of September in 2015.

This September, the Mysuru Palace had a highest footfall on 4th, with 12,853 tourists visiting the majestic structure and the lowest was on 9th with just 25 visitors. The Cauvery River water sharing issue has affected tourists inflow into the city. The tourism industry has taken a beating with a series of protests in the Cauvery basin districts and a couple of bandhs in the month of September.

The highest was on September 27 with 19,112 visitors and least on September 9 with 4,285 visitors. Shivakumar, an employee at the Palace, who mans the counter for cameras, said, visitors were less compared to previous years. With observation of Mahalaya Amavasye on Friday, and schools and colleges declaring Dasara holidays from October 1, tourists inflow may pick up slowly from weekend, if there are no Cauvery related agitations, he said.
