Nali-Kali kids to get drawing books, crayonsAs many as 35,409 children in Dakshina Kannada will benefit

All the children studying in first to third standard in government lower primary and higher primary schools will get drawing books and crayons during the academic year, under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, SSA District Project Coordinator Shivaprakash said that all the ‘Nali-Kali’ kids (upto third standard) in 931 government primary and higher primary schools will benefit from the scheme.

As many as 35,409 children will receive drawing books and crayons. The books and crayons have been supplied directly from the office of SSA director to the Block Resource Centres. “The materials have already reached and the distribution process has commenced,” he said.

Under Nali-Kali system, children in the first, second  and third standards will switch over to the activity-based learning method. It is a way  of teaching to make learning for children fun and meaningful. The concept, which focuses on individual care and child-centred and activity-based curriculum.

The drawing books have pictures of fruits, boats, vessels, rectangles, animals, flowers wherein the students will have to colour it using the crayons. Till last year, the children were drawing on slates or cardboards and the best drawings were hung in the classrooms. There will be one drawing class everyday as a part of curriculum. All the Nali-Kali kids were given geography kit last year, he said.

In fact, the book has explantation on how to draw a particular object and explanation on each object. It aims at creating awareness on environment, improving the creativity in children.

Maoist-infested areas

Shivaprakash has said that the Deputy Commissioner has released Rs 9.35 lakh to appoint 17 guest teachers in schools situated in the Moist-infested areas of Belthangady taluk in the district during the year. In fact, the DK ZP under SSA had appointed 13 guest teachers in the schools last year.  

All the 2,496 children in 24 schools in nine gram panchayats and 12 villages were given a bag, sandal, umbrella, geometry box, note books, English dictionary last year. The schools were given science kit, aqua guard, and consumer awareness books. Female children will be given sanitary napkins free of cost.

“The SSA will continue the programme of providing essential kits to the children studying in these 24 schools this year also. However, the items in the kit will be decided at a meeting convened at Belthangady on Thursday. The kit will have the needs of the children of these schools based on the feedback we collect from teachers,” he added.
