In an attempt to encourage farmers involved in growing banana, especially Mysore’s pride ‘Nanjangud rasabale’, vice-chancellor of University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, S B Dandin advised them to continue with the cultivation as it has medicinal qualities that may come handy at the time of natural calamities.
He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Banana Field Day’ at the farm of college of horticulture in Tandavapura recently. The programme had been organised jointly by the college of horticulture, extension unit and the department of horticulture, Nanjangud.
Dandin said local varieties of banana possess novel characters like fine quality and also resistance to pest and diseases. Instead of diverting from cultivating fruits, farmers should focus on adopting advanced technology in the realm for higher yield. He gave a call to cultivate and conserve Nanjangud rasabale, Mysore betelvine, Mysore jasmine and Erangere brinjal which have earned geographic indicatorship. Dandin released a bulletin on advanced technology to grow banana.
Prior to the session, banana field demonstration was conducted. About 100 farmers from Nanjangud taluk participated in the field day.
Director of extension Y K Kotikal, director of research M B Madalagere and deputy director of horticulture Doddakendegowda also spoke. Head of horticulture extension unit B G Prakash, former dean S Jagannath and others were present.
