A newborn boy, wrapped in a piece of gunny bag, was found set on fire on the banks of a tank at Vadagera village in Shahpur taluk of the district in the early hours of Wednesday. The baby has  been rescued.

It is said that the baby was born on Tuesday night. It was wrapped in a gunny bag, thrown into the tank and set on fire. Fortunately for the baby, the fire died down due to the dew.

Mallanna Neelahalli and Ramu Karikali Sahebreddy Kurki, of the village, heard the cries of the baby when they went to the banks of the tank early in the morning to relieve themselves.

They informed the police and the child helpline. The newborn is now being treated at the district hospital. The baby weighs 2.8 kg and is doing fine, doctors said. It will be handed over to the department of women and child development.
