City-based National Institute of Engineering (NIE), the state’s second oldest engineering college, has placed 65% of its students in the pre-placement stage, with the highest salary offered being Rs 25.18 lakh.

(NIE), which kick-started placements about a month ago, witnessed a tripling in the number of firms showing interest in hiring students, compared to the previous year. According to NIE’s placement office, campus pre-placements saw a participation and offers from 42 domestic and global companies. “There was the conversion of six internship offers to regular placement after the completion of the summer internship. The average salary is Rs 6.5 lakh per annum and has increased by 10%, compared to last year, with the highest CTC on offer being Rs 25.18 lakh per year,” said a press release from NIE.

NIE principal G Ravi said, “We were concerned over reports that the job market is slowing down for engineers. However, we were happy that companies chose NIE. They made early bets on students who interned with them. My belief is that there is no shortage of jobs for well-trained engineers. We emphasise on internships to make students employable”.

Harshith Divakar, training and placement officer, said, “India’s job market seems to be warming up. NIE has improved 40% of campus placements, compared to last year. NIE is likely to surpass the overall number of placements of the 2017-18 batch in the first three months of recruitment. There is a 15% to 20% hike in the salary offered by several companies. There is a shift from hiring graduate resource to skilled resource.”
