The Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Nandan Nilekani, has acknowledged the delay in processing Aadhaar applications and said that efforts were on to improve the system.
The UIDAI aims to process 10 lakh Aadhaar applications across the country everyday so that it can enrol 400 million citizens in 50 districts of 13 states and five union territories in the next two years, as proposed by the Union Minister for Finance, Pranab Mukherjee, in his Budget speech.
The Authority had already enrolled 200 million people, Nilekani said after receiving the honorary doctorate from the Central University of Karnataka, Gulbarga, here on Saturday.
To a question, the former CEO of Infosys Technologies admitted that the enrolment in Bangalore was a bit slow. He said that there was a huge backlog and efforts were being made to improve the situation.
Littérateur U R Ananthamurthy, who also received the honorary doctorate, lamented the plight of universities run by the State government.
