Former minister Murugesh Nirani ‘invited’ the government on Saturday to run the Nirani Sugars Limited owned by him at Mudhol in the district.

He said the government could take over the firm and appoint an IAS or KAS officer as the administrative officer. It can then distribute the profit earned between farmers and factory owners, he told a press conference here. The demand by cane growers for Rs 3,000 per tonne of the produce supplied to the factories was justifiable. But, in the current market scenario, it was not possible for the factories to pay more than Rs 2,000. He said the government should chip in with the remainder of Rs 1,000.
