Udupi: The Udupi Town Police arrested two interstate thieves from Madhya Pradesh in connection with a recent theft at a PWD residential quarter and recovered 681.830 grams of silver, 470 milligram of gold, and Rs 1,700 in cash.
The arrested are Bangad alias Bangu alias Ramesh Jawan Singh (37) and Kaliya alias Kaalu (25), both hailing from Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. The third suspect is still at large.
A case was registered on theft following a complaint by Kushala H. She said that between 6 PM on July 19 and 7 AM on July 20, thieves broke into their home at PWD Quarters, Block B, Mission Compound, 76 Badagubettu, Udupi taluk. They gained entry by unlocking the door and accessed a bedroom cupboard using a key left on a sewing machine and decamped with silver valuables.
Accordingly, a case was registered at Udupi Town Police Station under Sections 331(3), 331(4), and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Acting under the direction of Udupi SP Hariram Shankar, with guidance by Additional SP Sudhakar Naik and DySP Prabhu DT, the investigation team led by Inspector Manjunath Badiger reviewed CCTV footage near Circus Ground and NH-66. The CCTV footage helped the police to identify the suspects and arrest them.
According to preliminary investigation, both arrested were involved in three thefts in Udupi in 2024 and also confessed to similar crimes in various parts of Karnataka. Several theft cases have also been reported against them in Maharashtra.
Bangad alone has 11 cases against him in other states, while Kaliya has three in Udupi. The duo were targeting houses during weekends and holidays.
