Tumakuru: Girls hostel-2443 run by the Backward Classes Welfare Department in Basavapattana on the outskirts of the City is facing numerous problems. The inmates have written to the department commissioner urging to take steps to resolve the problems.
Rotten green vegetables and 2.5 kg chicken for 150 students are being used and meals are not being served as per menu. Poha is served instead of idli on Sunday. The hostel authorities bring food from the neighboring hostel and lick a photograph through GPS and upload it on the department portal. Eggs and bananas are not being distributed to all students and poor quality food is being served to the hostel inmates, the students alleged.
Mudde (ragi balls) are not being served in the afternoon. When asked, the staff says the flour has been exhausted. The hostel warden is not arriving to the hostel properly. There is no battery backup (UPS) and solar facility in the hostel. Students will have to spend a night in the dark if electricity goes off, hampering their studies. This issue was brought to the notice of the conferred authorities but to no avail, the inmates criticised.
"There is no power connectivity to the toilets and the bathrooms and cleanliness have vanished. The doors of the toilets have broken and some taps are defunct. Thorny bushes have grown around the hostel and become an abode for snakes. The hostel warden is playing with the lives of the children. Beds have not been distributed for the past four to five years. New blankets have arrived to the hostels but steps have not been taken to distribute them. The hostel staff have forcibly taken our signature that new blankets have been issued," the girl students have mentioned in the letter.
The students have claimed that they will tell the truth if an investigation is conducted. Deputy Commissioner Shubha Kalyan had visited the hostel earlier for inspection, but nothing happened.
