One person was injured in a clash between members of National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday in Sheshadripuram police limits.
Trouble started when NSUI members gathered in front of the ABVP office to protest the death of dalit student of Central University, Hyderabad, Rohith Vemula. Police rushed to the spot and defused the situation.
Complaints and counter complaints were filed following the incident and five people were detained in connection with the violence, police said.
Additional forces were deployed at the ABVP office to prevent violence. ABVP secretary Basavesh Kore suffered minor injuries and office window panes were also broken in stone throwing.
A group of around 25 students gathered at the spot around 11.30 am to protest Vemula’s suicide. They abused and raised slogans against the ABVP, blaming it for Vemula’s death, police said.
ABVP members Basavesh, Santosh Reddy and eight others rushed outside hearing the noise and objected to the protests. A constable on the spot alerted his higher-ups, who rushed to the spot with more forces and took both the factions to the station, police said.
Meanwhile, another group of around 50 NSUI members reached the ABVP office and clashed with ABVP workers. In the melee, some of them threw stones at the ABVP office, police added. DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil visited the spot and said five people have been booked for criminal trespass.
ABVP member Prashanth lodged a separate complaint claiming that he had been receiving threat calls for the last two days.
